TANGO: “Patrimonio de la Humanidad” by UNESCO

So many exciting things going on in my tango world including this announcement today.  I received emails from so many people today with this declaration.  It will be interesting to see how this plays into the world of tango outside of Argentina.

Tango and Candombe have been declared Intangible Patrimony of Humanity at the UNESCO conference that is going on in Abu Dhabi (September 28-October 2), at the United Arab Emirates. The Tango candidacy was proposed by Argentina and Uruguay together. Candombe has been nominated by Uruguay as the African Uruguayan genre because of its particular music and its community roots.

This nomination means that the national authorities, and the city authorities in Montevideo, Uruguay, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, will develop programs in research, documentation, education, and affirmative actions and support measures for the communities involved in the traditional Candombe and Tango culture.
