The last day!

Here is the latest link for pictures I have uploaded to Facebook

shoes!

The tour ended on a positive note.  We were able to take the official "shoe" picture as well!  I think there are 35 pairs here!!!!

We spent the last few days with the group somewhat divided. We picked several different places and allowed them to pick or come to both milongas.

Tuesday we had some of the group go to an early milonga and a small handful of us went to another milonga later.  I think the group still had fun attending the milonga that they felt they would most enjoy or just to explore a different setting.

Wednesday we had a fabulous class with Analia y Marcelo.  We were lucky to have them for teachers 2 years ago and so happy to have them again this year.  It's amazing to watch teachers grow as well and I still love their approach and the material and ideas they have to share.  They were fun!analia y marcelo et al
I think they all got something from this class. It is hard not to.  They offer some lovely ideas for connection and they always always stress dancing not this idea of a follower and a leader but DANCING!  I like this!

After the class the group did their thing to get ready for the evening's milonga. They had 2 choices again.  A small group of us went to the later evening TangoLab.  I thought that this might be an interesting place to go for another casual venue with a young scene.  I also knew the DJ - Mathieu - a Canadian transplant to Buenos Aires.

TangoLab - the guys

Here are the guys!!  Hanging out!  There was a performance here as well.  Which for some reason we haven't seen too many this trip.  Maybe because it's hard to top Julio y Corina from the first night!!!

TangoLab wasn't very crowded but it was very relaxed.  It was a different feel and had a mostly younger scene.

Thursday was the last full day of "stuff"!  We had our early afternoon tea at Cafe Tortoni on Avenida de Mayo.  We decided to try this cafe this year as it is a nice walk from San Telmo. www.cafetortoni.com.ar/  Unfortunately, I think, Las Violettas is much much better and will return to that next year!

Cafe Tortoni

I think Tortoni relies heavily on its historical significance and it's expensive and not as beautiful.  We did have our long table in a room at the back.  It was kind of funny because the room had a large Buenos Aires scape and we took advantage of the good lighting to do lots of fun poses!!!

Maybe you can see the backdrop in this next picture.... Here's Jose Luis, one of the assistants.

We feasted on coffee and alfajores, Lydia's new found love!!  And we had cake and churros.  It was fun and nice to have the group together.  They wanted pictures with the boys and just Sabrina, our female assistant.  We had just the girls and the boy assistants!  Many different combinations!

Thursday night we all went to Nino Bien. This is one of my favorite milongas and I asked that everyone attend. There were a few people who attended another milonga earlier and we all met up at Nino Bien.  The night was slow going it seemed.  The hall was never quite as packed as it gets but Rommel and I stayed quite late.  The rest of the gang was done in several waves throughout the evening.  I had the opportunity to share several tandas with Dany "El Flaco", who was one of the teachers on the tour 2 years ago.  He had just come out of some sciatic surgery about 46 days ago (if I understood correctly!) and here he was, well, here we were!

Today the tour ended with checkouts and with some final shopping. It had rained last night but the sun managed to break out and leave those who were leaving a sunny day to travel.  5 of the group make their journey home today.  Lydia, with a bag packed with alfajores, shoes for all and hopefully great memories.

We have just a couple days of rest and then on Sunday there are 8 of us venturing to Mendoza for some vino and relaxation.  We will have 1 day of dancing while there.

I hope to spend some time in the next few blogs discussing some observations on the city.

Nice autumn weather!

On Sunday the sun came out for us!  We went to the Feria de los Mataderos.  This Dancers at Feria de los Mataderoswas my first time there.  We took a 20 minute (or so) taxi ride and we arrived around noonish.  It was a fair similar to the one in Recoleta or like the one here in Plaza Dorrego BUT it has a stage where there is live music and Folkloric dances.  It was really neat!  They danced: Chacarera, Chamame, Samba.  The artisans were lovely as well.  I think the small group of us who went enjoyed it.  I know I really enjoyed the empanadas that we ate!
Las SaltenasHere are the ladies making empanadas in a stall.

There was this very old man with a face of a thousand stories who was dancing in the street with the rest of whomever wanted to.  At one point he yelled at the crowd "to move farther away" - to give more space.

Old Man at the Feria

Sunday we had a wonderful asado prepared for us by the America del Sur where we are staying.  We had some beef, chicken and veggies and a beautiful desert plate prepared for us by Chef Juan!  During the course of our meal we were also lucky to have some live music with 2 musicians.

Dessert by Chef Juan

The America del Sur often plans things and it so happened that they were planned for this evening.  It was a lovely addition to our meal!

Sunday night we went to El Beso for some dancing.  It was a bit of a controversial evening!!!  A little bit of male tension on the dance floor and some female frustration for the desire for more dances.  This is an interesting position that I have found myself in.  The need to fill my "contract" with everyone to have them dancing as much as possible or at least experiencing some growth and satisfaction.  AND noticing that this is the midway point of the tour - people are tired and some of us are coming down with colds!  NOT ME though!  I also had an interesting evening dancing with an older milonguero - pretty famous - he is known as ToTo!  Really interesting to dance with these older men (like the famous milonguero TeTe who just passed this January).  They have an interesting phrasing as well as small steps - not a lot of drama or not too busy in their dancing.  Really lovely and totally unexpected.

Rommel has been down for a couple of days and today - Tuesday - seems to be much better.  Lu was a little under the weather and a few people in the group took the night off last night.

I have decided to divide the group for the next few days to try to maximize everyone's experience.  This also means dividing the assistants.  So for today and tomorrow I have decided to offer 2 options and those who want to go to 1 milonga go there and to another one go to the other one.  I do not think I can spread myself as thinly by trying to go to both places.  So I will just go to 1 or the other... some of the group are going to both - which is great!!!

So last night a small group of us went to see the Orquesta EL Afronte. www.elafronte.com.ar/  I think we had fun.  It is right around the corner from where we are staying, so that's a nice bonus!  It's a little place that has a dive-bar feel!  But seeing and dancing to live music is always pretty cool!!!  Ryan had an interesting dance - a full circle of sorts for him! He danced last night with the assistant who helped us on his first tour 3 years ago!!!  It was really nice to see her and for Ryan to be courageous and dance with her.  So great for him!IMG 3125

Rainy Day in BA – Saturday May 29

Somehow the rain didn't stop many from doing whatever they wanted to do today!  Several of the group had private lessons. It is Jayne's birthday so she treated herself to a hair trimming and a pedicure. I think Claudia went to the museum. So many were busy anyway.  And it gave me a chance to catch up a little bit on a few items.

Here is a link to some more pics from the week.

I thought I would spend some time commenting a little on the types of milongas we have been going to this trip.  My assistants picked the milongas very well this year.  The group as a whole has been dancing a lot.  That's the purpose and I'm very happy about that.

Some of the group has opted to do many things on their own and I think this is fabulous as well.

Delisa has been taking so many fantastic pictures and I hope I will have a link to them as well.  They are so beautiful and such a great view of the city through her eyes.

The visit yesterday to the Palacio Barolo - www.pbarolo.com.ar/ - was really interesting.  The view from the top was amazing.  A clothing store called Tango Moda is located there. How interesting to have a tango clothing store at the very top - a nice place to go to work!  Some of the group bought some clothes there so that was great too!
Tango Moda shopping
The shop is quite small but their in house tailor is there and the access to 2 terraces for dancing or for a parrilla are there AND A GREAT VIEW!  They gave us a glass of wine - and the ladies and the gents went at it!  They have a couple of dressing rooms and it was kind of fun! And of course bartering is always key and Rommel is super good at that... I have seen his mom in action and know he refined his skill from her!

Good looking gang!!!  Ryan, Katie, Delisa, Earl, Claudia, Jayne, Linda, Lydia, Joey, Lu, Michael, Kaitlin, Romme and I on the roof at the Palacio Barolo and the end of our shopping there.

Tonite we are off to an early milonga at Cachirulo - Maiupu 444.  And hopefully it won't be too much of a challenge to get there.  Then I think there is a small group who really wants to go to La Viruta for late night tango. So we'll see how it goes!

All Here – Friday May 28

It has been a whirlwind of a few days.  AND everyone is here now! YEAH!

Welcome Empanadas!

The first night, Tuesday, we saw the famous tango orchestra: Color Tango.  They were fantastic - as usual!  Then Julio y Corina performed with another younger couple: Rodrigo Palacio y Agustina.  It was fantastic.  The tour group was tired but I think they were pleasantly surprised by such a treat on the first day.  I think it also "covered" the fact that we had to walk several blocks from our place to catch a taxi - because of all the bicentennial celebrations that were happening blocks from our doorstep!

Orquesta Color Tango at Salon Canning

Wednesday night we went to a "new" milonga for me.  Sueno Porteno was the name - wow was it packed.... The ladies loved it, they had a good time. It was a little earlier and it was interesting.  Here is a link to their gallery of pictures! Check out: 56, 72, 76, 77, 79, 82, 86, 113 for pictures of the group.

Thursday night we went to La Gran Taberna to eat - my favorite place and we have left overs! yeah! Then to Nino Bien to dance.

Today we had a fabulous class with Christian y Virginia.

Tonite we went to La Gricel for their milonga.

(I am having such a hard time with WordPress - which is the editor/program for this blog - i can't seem to insert pictures easily and i waste a lot of time trying to just upload things...)

Day 1 of Bicentennial Festivities!

I have posted some pictures thus far to the following link
www.facebook.com/album.php

Last night this lovely small group (Delisa, Katie, Ryan, Rommel and I) went to a recommended restaurant in La Boca.  There's always a story otherwise the blog would be boring!!!

The restaurant is called El Orbrero. It is located at Agustin Caffanera 64 in La Boca just a few blocks from Puerto Madero.  In a nutshell both taxis that took us got lost - REALLY lost.  What is wrong with these Taxistas?  They say they'll take you, they have no idea where they are going and then they get lost and still have no idea where they are going!  Thank goodness I had stressed the idea we take a radio taxi and the taxi driver called in and asked for directions and they were still wrong - twice.

Now mind you, La Boca - has 1 block (Caminito) that is ok to hang out in, during the daytime and that's it!!!  The rest is kind of scary and not safe.  And because we were lost the cab driver was scolding me for being in this part of the city, "there are plenty of other places to eat in the city."  SO this blog is for my dad who so wanted me to try it since a friend of his highly recommended it.  AND it was very good and completely all locals and very fresh and very loud and family-like.  We had an easier time of leaving the place!

El Orbrero

We made reservations for 9:00pm and boy did we arrive just in time. The place by 9:30 and 10 was packed.

Today we ate at our favorite healthy place for late breakfast /normal lunch El Origen.  I still have to say their food is so delicious.  So healthy, delicious and I love it.  It appears that everyone we take there loves it too!!!

Today also began the festivities of the Bicentennial.  9 de Julio, the major street is completely cut off for the next several days for parades and live performances and stalls.  Today was the parade of the Provinces - each province was represented in some form.  Hard to see too much with all the throngs of people but interesting some of the floats.  The Mendoza float was really nice.  Cordoba had some big truck with a band on it playing salsa music!  some interesting costumes... i really wanted to see some dances but missed all of that....

So everyone made their way out dancing tonite and I wanted to stay in and catch up on the blog and reading...  Delisa went out earlier with Lindsay and Katie and Ryan caught up with Rommel and I after their afternoon of Ryan playing some Ultimate Frisbee.  Ryan, Katie and I went for some dinner and it was nearly 11pm - that restaurant was packed.  They took off for Tango at Cachirulo which shouldn't have been too difficult to get to since they didn't have to pass over 9 de Julio... we'll see how it went.  I hope that everyone had fun.

Rommel and I have our list of todo's before the tour begins.

Maybe we will check out some more of the Fiestas tomorrow....

Prepping Tango Tour 2010

I've been in Buenos Aires for 2 days.  I am in the noisiest place on earth.  The Ostinatto Hostel looks good on their website but the atrium should have been the dead give away.  Or maybe the word 'hostel'!!! Fantastic architectural inventions the atrium.  They let in lots of light, they give a spacious look to place.  BUT let me tell you, between the atrium and the paper thin doors on the room of this place I feel like I am definitely in the noisiest place on earth.

I await the arrival of Katie, Ryan and Rommel and then I hope we can take action and find another place to stay.

Meanwhile, I have just discovered that I can't find my cable to download pictures from my camera... swell.... So we start with the written word and move on to pictures when i figure that out!

Delisa and I arrived without a hitch on Wednesday. I was curious to see how the new entry tax would work.  It was just another line.  What they did was to separate those incoming passengers from the US (and 2 other places that sleep deprivation has erased from my memory) into a different line altogether.  And of course the longest line at Immigration.  So you wait then you get to a small booth where you pay with cash or credit card, they give you a receipt, it is a sticker placed in your passport and it lasts for 10 years.  IF your passport expires during that time you have to bring the expired passport with the "visa" in it with your new passport to travel to BA.  THEN you go to another line where you get your stamp and they ask you if you're just visiting.  "Of Course".

The preparation for the Bicentennial celebrations are well on their way.  This includes blocking off streets - most specifically the most important one - 9 de julio. Not all of it is blocked of course but just the important parts!  The ones where most taxis, etc travel through.  The festivities are set to start on Saturday and last through Tuesday!!!  Along with these enthusiastic preparations comes the protesters.  ALL of them!!!

It also appears that the famous Teatro Colon will re-open for the Bicentennial buenosaires.gov.ar/teatrocolon/
My taxi driver from yesterday informed me that they supposedly will be open to the public for free on Saturday...This is exciting!  We'll see if that's true! I hope so!

Delisa and have gone for several long walks - already enjoyed the food at Origen and some churros!

Delisa went off with Lindsay (who is here but not on the tour) last night while I was delivering goods and visiting with Heather and her family.  She had a wonderful time dancing and she danced non-stop at 2 milongas!!!  I was sorry that I missed her FIRST milonga in Buenos Aires experience.  But I'm so happy for her.  She said that she was also amazed at how easy it was to follow.  This is so great!!!!  I hope she posts to her blog and I will link to it.

I met with Dear Isaac, one of my tango assistants, and a favorite dancer.  We went over the schedule and have a few exciting things planned for the tour.  It appears that there will be some fun stuff that are already happening and we'll take advantage of that for sure.

I hope I can resolve my lack of a connection for my camera to the computer as well as finding a more peaceful place to spend the weekend before the tour actually begins.

It is raining today in Buenos Aires and very humid.  My blownout straightened hair is slowly curling on its very own!
