I am working with Tango Mercurio in DC for another 3 weeks as 1 of the main teachers in 5 summer camps. We are sharing Argentine Tango with students ages 14 – 21. My colleague and I see the students 2x / week. And we teach at each camp at least once. There are 2 camps that are known as “dance” camps – the other camps are a variety of “topics” of which I am still unclear about!
It is a great opportunity to really explore this dance form with another age group and in a different format. Meaning: they don’t always choose tango.
The biggest challenge is keeping them engaged. The form itself – the dance form, the physical form is boring to them. There has been much apathy among the camps.
A successful day lately is if we get a few of the students moving in tango-like ways!
It is a new process for me and yet, I feel that I have the skills and the resources to reach these young people and possibly leave them with something, something that I may never know, after the 6 weeks are over.
