Improving your Tango Technique

I have created a series of videos with exercises focused on improving tango technique. As I explain in the first video of this series that we start as social dancers, maybe dancing 1 or 2 nights / week to then going to our first festival, marathon, or trip to Buenos Aires. Then, we become athletes overnight, dancing 12 or so hours/day. This abrupt dive into tango full-on can lead us on a path to injury. So learning proper technique and warming up the feet to prepare for dancing can help us. Think of it as preventative measures. (You can read and see me talk about Why Technique in this Vblog.)

I recommend taking it slowly and working at your own pace. Improving tango technique doesn’t have to feel like another mountain to conquer. These exercises are meant to be accessible anywhere. You can use a chair if you need to. The goal is not to put yourself into pain, but just to open up the joints and bring fresh oxygenated blood to the areas.

I am releasing them slowly as I don’t want my type A’s to go overboard with these stretches. For me, pain is NOT gain. You can also think about stacking these exercises – what I mean is, maybe you are in bed and you do the alphabet with your big toes. Maybe you are waiting in line at the grocery store check out (does anyone ever do that anymore?) and you can do some standing on one leg ankle circles. OR you can make focused time for yourself to work on your body, to take care of yourself.

I will release the next videos in the coming weeks. They will target not only the feet, but working upwards, to include the legs and to bring awareness to how the whole body helps you in this dance, it’s not just about the feet but using the whole body to support your dance.

The playlist for the series will be located on my Youtube Channel – Technique for Better Dancing Playlist.

I’ll be in Phoenix Arizona November 29 – December 8, 2018. I look forward to being back! Contact me directly for limited number of private lessons and private lesson packages.
